Escape The Couch: BIG 200 (WUEC Issue 67) by Tiamari

So here I am… 200 parkruns done and dusted. Consecutively. A South African record, they tell me. Am I feeling rather chuffed with myself? Yeah I guess so…

But this article is not about me - it is about you. Yes, you on the couch, thinking that you are not a runner. I am no runner either! My best time is pretty average, and, even after 4 years of parkrunning every single Saturday, I still walk most of the way.

I know some of you are regulars at parkrun. You found a “home” and you made a ton of new friends. Whatever your PB is, pat yourself on the back. You are a winner!

What is a PB, you may ask… “PB” is an acronym for “Personal Best”. Yeah that’s right. This is not a race against each other. You are competing against yourself only. You cannot lose; you cannot be “last”. How cool is that! Your time gets recorded and you get your most recent stats in an email after every event.

Would you like to get fit, the fun way? Then parkrun is for you. Can you walk 100 meters in 2 minutes? Then it would take you about 20 minutes to do 1 kilometer. Do that 5 times and you have completed the parkrun in an hour. The last walker at Sunrise-on-Sea typically finishes in just more than an hour. It’s a walk in the park!

Let’s look at the costs: Most short distance running event fees range from about R50 to R100. The 2016 Discovery Surfer’s Challenge entry fee was R110, and the ever popular Tomato Trot charged R50 for the 2016 event. If you want to make it a family outing it can all add up. But a tight budget need not tie you to the couch! Parkrun is 100% free. You not only get to run or walk for free every Saturday, but you even get a free high quality t-shirt after completing 50 events. So you can have your cake and eat it too!

Talking about cake… why don’t you join us next Saturday (after parkrun) for coffee and cake at the Murambi Rose Café? Or just coffee, if you don’t enjoy cake after a lovely brisk walk…
