Do not (over) do Drugs! (Issue 65) by Tiamari

According to Wikipedia, a Drugstore is a common American term for a type of retail store centrally featuring a pharmacy that dispenses prescription medication and sells over-the-counter medications. Although the term Pharmacy is more generally used in South Africa, there is a reason why it is still widely known as a “drug store”.

In the 18th century alcohol, morphine, cocaine and heroin were widely used to medically treat anything from tooth ache to coughing. Cigarettes were prescribed to relieve asthma, hay fever, head colds, and throat diseases, although not recommended for children under 6 years old.

Dangerous drugs that are illegal today were routinely given to children of all ages (even babies) by their own mothers. What has changed?

An article By Rick Weiss in The Washington Post (15 April 1998) stated that 106,000 people die annually in the U.S. from properly prescribed drugs, with heart medications, blood thinners and chemotherapeutic agents causing the most deaths.

“More than 2 million Americans become seriously ill every year because of toxic reactions to correctly prescribed medicines taken properly, and 106,000 die from those reactions, a new study concludes. That surprisingly high number makes drug side effects at least the sixth, and perhaps even the fourth, most common cause of death in this country.”

        Dangerous Drugs

According to Life Sources Inc (a nutritional company), some drugs that should have been banned 25 years ago, is common practice today. Doctors cannot be sued for prescribing medication that is acceptable practice within the medical field.

They list the top 12 most dangerous modern prescription drugs as follows:

        1. Prednisone or Cortisone

It is effective in the short term for the treatment of certain ailments, but the long term side effects of this drug are devastating to the body and will totally destroy it.

        2. Methotrexate and other chemotherapeutic agents.

Chemotherapeutic agents are poisons that kill every cell in the body, not just cancer cells. Methotrexate is used indiscriminately by many practitioners to treat rheumatoid arthritis.

        3. Coumadin or Warfarin (blood thinners).

This is in essence rat poison, and weakens blood vessels and cells. It is however continually prescribed to prevent strokes and heart attacks.

        4. Cholesterol Lowering Drugs

The American Heart Association has recently admitted that cholesterol levels are not indicators of potential heart disease! In fact, you may actually increase your risk of stroke since your body utilizes cholesterol to maintain cardiovascular health!

        5. Prozac

Prozac is currently used by more than 12 million people worldwide. It belongs to a class of drugs which alter the mechanism that balances levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain. These drugs have been shown to alter mood and behaviour.

        6. Ritalin, Cylert, Dexadrine, Adderal (Amphetamine and amphetamine-like drugs used for ADD/ADHD)

Often abused and misused, these drugs don't cure. A child on Ritalin will simply become quiet and zombie-like. There is also the danger of psychological addiction and dependency.

        7. Diuretics

Diuretics increase the kidney's normal mechanisms of action, giving rapid relief to people with excess fluid. However, the long term use of diuretics to manage high blood pressure dangerously depletes the body of vital minerals. The loss of these minerals can lead to spasms in your coronary arteries, stroke, irregular heart rhythms and even heart attack.

Though effective in the short term, daily use can be fatal.

        8. Proscar

Almost every man older than 70 has some cancer cells in his prostate gland. These are slow growing cells that usually do not cause problems. Surgery, radiation or chemotherapy are often not necessary.

Proscar (finasteride) is a drug with serious side effects, and women are advised to not even handle the drug or have sex with men who are on it.

        9. Diabetes Drugs

It is very likely that people with type I diabetes, whose pancreas produces too little insulin, will need ongoing insulin replacement.

However, type II, or non-insulin dependent diabetes, is the most common type. The oral drugs which are used to control this type, have numerous side effects and are not necessary in most cases.

        10. Arthritis drugs

If you have arthritis, your physician most likely prescribed nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as Motrin (ibuprofen), Ansaid, Clinoril, Vicodin, Celebrex and Naproxen. Initially, these drugs will take care of the pain.

However, the drugs destroy the cartilage lining the ends of the bone (causing hip destruction) and 6,000 people a year die from the side effects of NSAID's.

        11.Cold and Flu Medications

Many people self-medicate a cold or flu with aspirin, ibuprofen and decongestants without giving a thought to the possible toxicity caused by these medications which actually suppress the immune system at a time when it is needed most.

Studies showed that these drugs increase the length of time of infection and cause greater respiratory discomfort.

12.Beta Blockers and Calcium channel Blockers.

Beta blockers work by blocking the ability of your heart to respond to epinephrine and adrenaline which stimulate your pulse rate and blood pressure, elevating both. These drugs are meant to weaken the hearts so that your blood pressure is lowered and heart pain is reduced.

Calcium blockers accomplish the desired effect of lowering high blood pressure by blocking the essential functions of the heart and blood vessel cells.

        What is the alternative?

Of course there are obvious benefits to the short term use of certain prescription drugs, but unfortunately long term use can cause serious harm.

A holistic approach to health is a much better solution. Natural products produce better results and are not harmful.
